Quick answer
If you want a tactile, table-presence upgrade that works across multiple games, the West Kingdom Metal Coins are a strong choice. If you prefer new gameplay options or variety for a lower cost, promo card sets like the West Kingdom Mini Card Set or PP4: West Kingdom Various offer more flexible content per dollar.
What you get with each upgrade
The West Kingdom Metal Coins are a set of 50 metal coins designed as a deluxe upgrade for any game in the West Kingdom Trilogy. They replace the punchboard coins that come with the base games, adding weight and a satisfying clink to transactions. At a catalog price of USD 15.75 (compared to USD 25.00), they offer a significant discount while providing a premium feel.
Promo card sets, on the other hand, introduce new content rather than replacing existing components. The West Kingdom Mini Card Set includes seven cards for Architects of the West Kingdom and Paladins of the West Kingdom, such as the Cathedral Reward and King’s Order. The PP4: West Kingdom Various pack contains ten promo cards for Architects, Paladins, and Viscounts, including cards like Promo Paradise and Meeple Folk. Both are priced under USD 4.00, making them budget-friendly ways to expand your games.
How they affect your game experience
Metal coins change the physical feel of the game without altering rules. Every trade, tax, or reward feels more immersive. The upgrade is permanent—once you own them, you can use them in Architects, Paladins, Viscounts, or any future West Kingdom game that uses coins.
Promo cards add new strategic options or variety. For example, the PP4 set includes a Courier card for Viscounts and a Jugador card for Architects, which can shift how you approach a session. However, these cards are optional and may not see use in every play. They also require shuffling into existing decks, so they affect game balance slightly.
Trade-offs to consider
- Cost per use: Metal coins cost USD 15.75 but serve every session. Promo cards cost under USD 4.00 but only affect games where you draw those specific cards. Coins offer better value if you play often; promos are cheaper for occasional variety.
- Gameplay impact: Metal coins change nothing about rules or strategy. Promo cards introduce new abilities or conditions that can alter your decisions. Choose coins for ambiance; choose promos for new challenges.
- Compatibility: Coins work with any West Kingdom game that uses coins. Promo cards are game-specific—some may not fit your collection if you only own one title. Coins are safer if you own multiple West Kingdom games; promos require checking which game each card belongs to.
