Quick answer

Garphill Games promo cards do not change the core rules or win conditions of a game; they add optional cards that expand variety, especially for players who already know and enjoy the base game. If you own the matching base game and play it regularly, a small promo pack can be a worthwhile addition. If you are new to the game or rarely get it to the table, skip the promos and put that budget toward a base game you will actually play.

What Garphill Games promos actually are

Promo cards for Garphill Games are small, optional card sets originally released through campaigns or promo events. They are not expansions with new boards, factions, or scenarios. Instead, they slot into an existing game to add a handful of new cards, often characters or roles that introduce minor variety without rewriting the rulebook. Because they are optional, the base game remains fully playable and balanced without them.

They are tied to a specific base game or series, so compatibility matters.
They typically include a small number of cards and sometimes a rules card.
They are designed to be mixed in or left out without breaking the game.

How to tell if a promo pack fits your shelf

The first question is not whether a promo is good, but whether you own and regularly play the base game it supports. A promo for a game you have not played will sit unused. The second question is what kind of variety you want. If you already play a game often and want a few new decisions without learning a full expansion, a promo pack is a low-commitment way to refresh it. If you are still learning the base game, adding promo cards can dilute the intended first experience.

Check the base game title on the promo listing before buying.
Consider how often the base game hits your table.
Decide whether you want more variety or more depth; promos usually add variety.

Promo cards vs base game: where your money goes furthest

A base game gives you a complete experience with its own rules, components, and replayability. A promo pack gives you a small optional addition to a game you already own. If you are choosing between the two, the base game almost always delivers more play time per dollar. Promos make sense after you have a base game you love and want to keep it fresh. They are a supplement, not a substitute.

Base games are self-contained; promos require a base game to use.
Promos are best for players who already know the base game well.
If your budget is limited, prioritize a base game you will play often.

What to check before adding a promo to your cart

Read the product description for the exact base game name and the number of cards included. Some promos cover a single game, while others bundle cards for multiple titles in a series. Also check whether the promo is a single card set or a collection, because that affects value. If the listing does not state a specification you care about, treat that as a limitation rather than assuming it is included.

Match the promo to the exact base game you own.
Note how many cards you get and whether a rules card is included.
For series promos, confirm which titles are covered.

Decision rules for buying Garphill Games promos

You own the base game and play it often: A promo pack adds optional variety without requiring you to learn a full expansion. Check that the promo matches your base game exactly. Buy the promo if you want a small refresh for a game you already love.
You own multiple games in a series: A combined promo pack like the West Kingdom collection can cover several titles at once, which is more efficient than buying single-game promos separately. Compare the bundle against individual promos if you only need one title.
You are new to the base game: Promo cards are optional and can wait. Learn the base game first so you understand what the promo cards actually change. Delay the promo purchase until you have played the base game several times.
You are choosing between a promo and a base game: A base game gives you a complete experience; a promo only adds to one you already own. If your budget is limited, the base game is the better first purchase. Prioritize base games unless you already have a game you play regularly.

Wayfarers: Townsfolk Promo Cards: This product is a promotional card set from the 2023 Dice Tower Kickstarter Campaign (Card Set 4) and can optionally be used with the game Wayfarers of the South Tigris. Scholars: Kickstarter Translator Promo Cards: This product is a promotional card set from the 2023 Scholars of the South Tigris Kickstarter and can optionally be used with the game Scholars of the South Tigris. It includes 8 Translator Cards. For regular Scholars players, eight Translator Cards offer more variety in a single role, which can shift how you approach that part of the game.
