The motivations each expert starts with actually change how you play, not just a stat bump. My favorite so far is the one who gets a bonus for hoarding resources early, totally flipped my usual strategy. Twelve characters is way more replay value than I expected from an expansion.
Played three rounds with different experts and each one pushed me toward a totally different strategy, which I didn't expect from an expansion. The motivations add a nice layer of tension since you're never quite sure who's chasing what. Twelve characters is more than I'll probably ever get through,
