In addition to including components for an extra player, Rocks of Ruin also includes three new building types, 24 tiles, five large player boards, two new captain cards, shipwrecks and fortresses.
The three new building types completely changed how our group strategizes, especially the fortresses since they let you lock down a whole region. The extra player components meant my wife could finally join without us proxying a spare captain card. Tiles are thick and match the base game perfectly,
The extra player boards and the two new captain cards slot in seamlessly, and the shipwreck tiles add a nice twist to exploration. We've played twice with five people now and the game doesn't drag at all. The fortress buildings give a fun new strategic layer that keeps everyone on their toes.
The shipwrecks add a nice risk-reward twist that made our group rethink how we route around the islands. Only gripe is setup takes a bit longer now with all the new tiles mixed in.
